Staycation Guide - Kerry

When it comes to a weekend in Kerry, there are just too many options to choose from.

Here are my top 5 things to do when on a staycation in Kerry.

Skellig Island Views

On a sunny day, my favourite spin has to be from Portmagee Village to Ballinskelligs Beach. Why? Once you reach the top of the mountain and wind down the other side towards the bay, the view of Skellig Rock is breath taking. The real bonus is when you reach the waterfront.

Why? Ballinskelligs Chocolate Factory - with their endless free samples and a coffee to go, it is what keeps me coming back.

Tip- buy a bag of the lime white chocolate aka loop the loops!

Continue on to Ballinskelligs beach and finish your spin with a stroll along the shore - sand in your toes and wind in your hair.

The 'Moll's Gap' Experience

To experience the epitome of Irish rural scenery take a trip through Moll's Gap (near Kenmare). My preferred mode of transport is by car but if you are brave enough join the other cyclists climbing the mountain like they are in the Tour de France!

The cherry on top? A Nutella Crêpe in 'Strawberry Fields' - a café oozing with character and sugar highs (watch out for the sign by Avoca)!

Mountain Hike in Derrynane

If you feel like being one with nature for a few hours, throw on the hiking boots (or old runners in my case!). Head for Derrynane House, park the car and check out the Derrynane & Caherdaniel hiking map on display. There are various trails to suit all levels of fitness or for the more experienced hikers you can join the 'Mass Path Loop' of the Kerry Way from the car park too.

It is a great way to blow off the cobwebs and fill the lungs with some fresh mountain air!

Explore National Park, Killarney

Pack your backpack with a blanket and pick up a picnic in town. Hire a bike outside the park on Muckross Road (approx. €20 for the day) and cycle in to explore the National Park.

Plan your route so you finish at Muckross House and balm out on the lawn enjoying your picnic.

Tip - you may need a driving licence/passport for your bike deposit!

99's in Waterville

Never underestimate the power of a good 99! Grab one in Centra in the village (ask for sprinkles), head to the promenade, sit and enjoy the sea view.

A sunny day in Kerry is as good a day as it gets.
